Intona Answer Database (FAQ)

What is the Intona Answer Database?

As our company grows we also encounter more and more customer questions and support cases.

Would the Isolator improve the sound quality?

The intended purpose is complete isolation of both data and power lines. In an audio application, the resulting sound quality improvement is the…

I heard the Industrial version is vastly superior sounding to the Standard version. Can you comment on this?

We really cannot comment in a scientific way on the difference of Industrial vs Standard version in terms of audio quality.

Does the Isolator affect signal quality?

The 7054-based USB Hi-Speed Isolator is a phy-level receiver/isolator/reclocker/repacketizer working at a bidirectional bandwidth of 480 MBit/s.

List of Reviews related to the Intona Isolator

Here is a summary of links related to audiophile reviews regarding the Intona USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Isolator in alphabetical order.

Does isolation help to solve my test gear noise issue?

Clearly yes! Measurement gear like PicoScope is usually not isolated. The input ground of the device is connected to the USB ground.

Will the Isolator pass DSD Data? Is it bit perfect? Will it pass all higher resolution PCM also?

The Isolator can reach full USB bandwidth of 480MBit/s and it will pass DSD data in a bit perfect manner without changes.

Is the Isolator compatible to RME devices?

We have serveral RME units in our lab and prove full compatibility. In some cases, bus-powered products need an external power supply.

USB 2.0 compliance measurements

As the Intona USB 2.0 Hi-Speed isolator is a design from scratch, not using any ready-made USB isolation chips, we were often asked about…

Is there any customization possible, for example using a better oscillator?

What would you expect by using a "better" oscillator? We measured 12.5ps of RMS jitter on the USB packet clock.

Do you sell bare PCB versions of your products?

Our 7054 Isolator is also available as a bare PCB version. Please note that we usually do not sell this to private customers as this could lead to…

What is the "NF" option?

Upon request we provide a special modification to the LED blinking behaviour of the 7054-based isolator.

Is it possible to power the USB Isolator with a linear power supply instead of the PC USB +5V bus?

This would be possible if you use an external adapter cable which does split the supply.

Is the Isolator compatible to my XMOS-based device?

Some XMOS-based devices follow a non-standard reset procedure. We added a workaround for this into the firmware of all 7054-based isolator devices…

Why do I need to add a hub to the Isolator to get my device working?

This is a rare case and we are working constantly on compatibility enhancements.

Does the Isolator come with a USB cable?

A cable is not included. You will need an additional standard A/B USB cable to install the isolator.

Could you indicate the rise time and fall time of the USB output signals sent by the isolator device to the downstream device?

Here you go: Measured using a 7 GHz differential hi-z probe (WL600+D600ST) at far end on a working device.

What is the advantage of the industrial version over the standard version?

The industrial version of the High Speed USB Isolator has following benefits: 2.5kV isolation, thus higher isolation resistance.

Is the High Speed Isolator seen as a hub by the computer?

The Intona Hi-Speed USB Isolator does not act as a hub rather than doing transmission on cable level ("phy-to-phy" transmission).

Can you add another Intona Isolator in the chain?

Scenario 1: Host -- Intona -- Intona -- Device No, because there will be not enough timing margin to reclock the data within the same packet frame.

Assuming a 1A+ USB supply on the primary side, what is the maximum continuous current that the isolated side can draw?

Maximum continuous current that can be drawn from the 7054-based isolators is 500mA.

Is it possible to update the firmware of the Isolator?

It is possible but unfortunately not outside our factory. If you see any reason in doing an update, please contact us and we will discuss your issue.

Can I use the Micro-USB to connect my equipment?

No. The Micro-USB (labeled "AUX") is just usable as an optional power supply input. You cannot use it for data.

As per the USB 2.0 specification, all self-powered hubs should provide the ability to turn off power to downstream USB devices. Does the Isolator provide this ability?

The 7054-based Hi-Speed Isolator does not work as a hub and cannot provide a function to power off slave devices.

Does the Isolator work on a USB 3.0 port?

Yes, it works fine. A USB 3.0 port is fully compatible to USB 2.0 and usually delivers even more power than specified.

How to return a product?

If you need to return your Intona product, please use the form on this page. This ensures a smooth and rapid procedure.

Is there a photo of the inside circuity of the USB 3.0 isolator?

We have currently no official photo of the inside circuit. We do some hand modification on the first batch and that does not look well on public…

Will I always get the latest firmware when I order now?

If we release a new production firmware, all new ordered units will be updated from that day on.

How much current will draw the Isolator?

Add ~150mA to the current of the device(s) connected at the isolated side.

Why do you explicitly not recommend 7055-C for use with USB oscilloscope

Note: this is only valid for USB 3.0 oscilloscopes and does not affect to USB 2.0 devices.

Does the Isolator work with Windows XY?

The Isolator is compatible to all operating systems and does not need any driver. See also here.

Is the USB 3.0 isolator backwards compatible to USB 2.0?

Yes! The USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Isolator is fully compatible to USB 2.0 at Low-Speed, Full-Speed and Hi-Speed.

How fast will you ship after ordering?

If in stock, your purchase will be shipped the same or the next working day. Delivery time is usually 1 to 6 days, depending on your country.

What is the relationship between working voltage and isolation rating?

The relationship between a given working voltage and the required test voltage is complex and is a function of the application, the magnitude of…

Is it possible to pay by credit card?

You may pay by credit card by using our standard Paypal payment procedure. On the Paypal site, select "Pay with a debit or credit card".

What FCC standards does your devices comply with?

Our devices comply with the requirements listed in FCC Regulations, Part 15 for Class "A" digital devices and are also found to comply with Part 18.
