Ethernet Debugger: Layer 1 analysis, short frames, third-party injection and traffic generation
Layer 1. The Ethernet Debugger works on OSI Layer 2. It cannot show Layer
1 handshaking such as autonegotiation. For that you need an oscilloscope with
protocol decoding.
Short frames. The device passes traffic between its ports without
dropping packets, unless you use commands that do so or the port speeds
differ. Very short frames arriving at a high rate can be lost through FIFO
overflow in the capture path.
Injection from other programs. Start the host tool with --ipc-server.
It then opens a named pipe on Windows or a Unix domain socket on Linux and
macOS, through which other programs can inject packets.
Traffic generation. The inject command accepts --bw-packets and
--bw-bytes to generate traffic at a target rate in packets or bytes per
second.
